There has been a lot of talk post-Olympics of our sporting success inspiring a generation. But it isn't just elite athletes who are inspirational. Last week I had the privilege of crewing for my friend Tom Keen on his solo English Channel crossing. As he set off from
Samphire Hoe I posted pictures on my Facebook page of him swimming and was astounded by the response they got from my non-swimming friends, none of whom had even met Tom. They sent him good luck messages and tracked his progress online. Swimming the English Channel has that effect on people. If you don't already follow the Channel Swimming Association and Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation on Facebook then I recommend you do. Throughout the summer you can follow the successes and failures of
truly inspirational athletes taking on the Blue Riband challenge of open water swimming. Just yesterday we witnessed two-way solo crossings from Rebecca Lewis and Deirdre Ward, as well as one-way solo and relay swims. If you feel inspired to swim to France, check out Richard Royal's article below on what it takes to be part of a relay team. Enjoy the
newsletter and happy swimming. Jonathan Cowie Editor, H2Open Magazine |
