Last week the RLSS launched the Open Water Lifeguard Qualification, an important step to raising the bar in safety in the open water in the UK. It is inconceivable that a council would open a swimming pool or beach and not provide suitable lifeguard cover, yet in the UK
there are commercial lakes with no lifeguards and events with poor safety cover. The new qualification will hopefully not only make the open water safer for swimmers, but also help attract more and more people into the open water.
Perceived danger is also one of the barriers to getting started in open water swimming. The open water is not like your local leisure centre
pool: it can be cold, dark, and there might be things lurking in it. This July we are launching the H2Open Introduction to Open Water Experience – a practical course to introduce adults and children to the joys of open water. Perfect if you are just starting your open water
swimming journey. Full details are below. We have already had some great pictures submitted to the June/July H2Open/Selkie Reader Photo Contest. Send us your best open water swimming shots to be in with a chance of having them published in the next issue of H2Open magazine – and win a bundle of kit from Selkie. See our website for full details of how to enter the contest. Enjoy the newsletter and happy swimming,
