Welcome to the newsletter. How safe do you feel when competing in an event or swimming at a commercial, open water venue? Last weekend I attended a training course for a new open water lifeguard
qualification. It is the first RLSS qualification to target inland, non-tidal open water and aims to educate lifeguards on the specific safety issues of our sport. When we swim in an indoor pool there are certain safety expectations that are not always apparent in open water venues. Should we be regulating the open water? As our sport matures we must address these issues so that open water swimming can continue to grow and attract new participants. The new qualification should help set an
industry best practice when it comes to safety at events and venues. Read more about the new course in the Spring issue of H2Open magazine.
In today's training session Fiona Ford looks at pacing and explains that to
swim faster on race day you need to train for speed. This session first appeared in the August/September issue of the magazine – read more of Fiona's training sessions in every issue of H2Open magazine.
In the news
section this week we have elite action from the FINA World Cup with a win for Great Britain's Keri-anne Payne in Hong Kong, and we speak to Hungarian marathon swimmer Attila Mányoki about his record crossing of the Molokai Channel. Plus, the latest blog from guest blogger Deborah Durbin.
Enjoy the newsletter and happy
swimming!
