He may have used fins and a shark cage, but Walter Poenisch's 1978 swim from Cuba to the US was a truly historic swim. Designed to promote world peace, Poenisch started the 90-mile swim on his 65th birthday after a birthday toast from Fidel Castro. Read about Poenisch's remarkable achievements below.
