Think outdoor swimming and the first thing that pops into your head probably isn't central London. But the capital offers some great outdoor swimming spots – as well as the Thames (upstream beyond Putney), there are ponds, lakes and lidos that are open all year round. At the weekend I swam at two of London's
most iconic swimming venues, the Serpentine and Tooting Bec Lido, as I undertook Cyril's Challenge – a half marathon and two swims in memory of Cyril Wood, a much loved member of the Serpentine and South London swimming clubs. We didn't race and our swims were short, but outdoor swimming is about more than just sport and competition. It's about community, culture and a sense of belonging.
