Last weekend I took part in a swimrun race. It was my first swimrun event and was perhaps the most fun I have ever had in a race – not to say it wasn’t tough, but how could you not enjoy 5km of sea swimming and 14km of trail running? Say that to some people and they will look at you as
if you are mad. For many, exercise is just a means to an end, a chore rather than something they actually enjoy. Last week, a story in The Telegraph suggested that swimming, for most people, is a waste of time because their lack of ability means they do not exercise at a sufficient intensity to lose weight. Simon discusses the wider implications of this on sport in general in his blog.
Outdoor swimming (and, indeed, trail running) is not just about
exercise. It is about being part of a community, about fun and challenge, travel and escape from the day-to-day grind. It is about the thrill of feeling alive. It is being sat at your desk and dreaming of next weekend’s swimming adventure.
