Dear fellow swimmers
Last weekend, Olympic swimmer Toby Robinson invited me to join him and six other swimmers to test an event concept he’s working on, a 10km tidally-assisted swim down the Thames from opposite Kew Gardens to Putney Bridge.
It was a lovely, fun swim, and I’ve shared the full story here. You can find out more about the actual swim on 6 September here.
The swim reminded me of how lucky we are to be outdoor swimmers: our hobby (and perhaps lifestyle)
provides us with endless opportunities for adventure.
Swimming adventure is a theme we’ve leaned into over at Renaissance Swimmer this month. It’s been popular, so I wanted to share it here too, and encourage you to say yes to swimming adventures and experiences. Here are some ideas:
- Find a new open water spot – somewhere close
to home maybe, or perhaps a place you’re visiting.
- Visit a lido or pool you’ve always wanted to see.
- Get up extra early and take some family members or a friend somewhere for a swim and breakfast.
- Do a full moon swim (the next full moon is 29 July)
These are reminders to myself too. I often write about training and performance in swimming, but what I really enjoy – and what creates the best memories – are swimming adventures. Being
adventure-ready is a core motivation to train and stay fit.
This weekend, I’m away on a family trip in the Wye Valley, and I will be on the lookout for new places to swim.
What adventures have you got planned?

A few years ago, I experienced breathing difficulties on an open water swim. It was possibly swimming induced pulmonary edema (SIPE). If you haven't come across this before, it's worth being aware of. I've written about my experience with SIPE here.
