Dear fellow swimmers
Embrace the cold or head to the pool: Why not do both?
As winter approaches in the northern hemisphere, outdoor swimmers face a choice: embrace the chill for its thrill and
wellbeing benefits, or retreat to the warmth of indoor pools to focus on fitness and technique.
But why choose one over the other? Cold water and pool swimming complement each other brilliantly. A cold plunge is a great way to kick start your recovery and ease aching muscles after a hard training session in the pool. Meanwhile, pool swimming allows you
to safely cover distances you can no longer do outdoors.
Last weekend, on my 59th birthday, I swam my fastest ever 100m freestyle in a pool race – breaking the minute barrier for the first time. I’ve shared more in “Sub 60 by 60,” where I explore the training factors behind it. But in addition, perhaps cold water swimming supported my health and wellbeing, helping me maximise the benefits of training – though I admit that’s conjecture rather than hard science.
Moving on, we’re excited to share two inspiring interviews with you this week.
Also in The Dip this week...
Recorded last winter, we share our fascinating chat with 'Sauna' author Emma O’Kelly and cold water expert Dr Mark Harper about the benefits of contrast therapy (and how to do it!) and editor Ella reveals why Lake Orta in Italy should be your summer swim destination next year.
