Dear fellow swimmers
I never cease to be amazed by what swimmers do. On Saturday morning, 21 September, Neil Agius started swimming from Mellieha Bay on his home island of Malta. More than 60 hours later, after circumnavigating Malta and Gozo,
and then a second half-loop of Malta, he climbed out of the water in Ghar Lapsi. The World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) have now ratified this as a new world record of 142.3km of continuous swimming without current assistance.
Mediterranean Coastal Swim
Another
swimmer worth following is Jari Cennet Tammi. Starting on 30 September this year, the 67-year-old swimming adventurer is planning to spend the next seven years swimming along the north coast of the Mediterranean from Turkey to Spain.
Our more modest achievements
We can't all be like Neil and Jari but we can learn from them and take on our own swimming challenges. I recently did the Dart 10k for the first time ever, and it was as good as people told me it would be. Meanwhile Abi, one of our news editors and a relative newcomer to open water, took on the River Arun, which you can read
about in the next issue of Outdoor Swimmer magazine (if you subscribe).
Swim for the planet
We work with Climategames to help turn your swims into positive action for the planet such as planting trees or removing plastic from the ocean. This month, we're supporting a mangrove restoration project. To take part, download the Climategames app and join our challenge. It's easy and free.
Outdoor Swimmer magazine - October issue
In the October issue of Outdoor Swimmer magazine we look at how to keep fit and healthy over winter. Is it, for example, OK to deliberately put on weight for swimming? Is sea swimming the elixir of youth? And how do you wind down and
refocus after a summer of hard swimming?
