Made especially for sea and pool swimmers – we put TRIHARD skin and hair care products to the test!
Do you have a regular pre- and post-swim routine for your hair and skin? Me neither! Despite being in the pool two to three times per week and noticing the negative effect of chlorine on my hair and skin, I often feel too busy to do anything about
it.
According to our recent poll, I’m not alone! It feels like a neglected part of our pre- and post-swim routine and one that could so easily be improved with some specialist swimmers’ hair care
products and a few simple changes of habit.
Does your hair suffer from regular chlorine or salt exposure?
Gear Editor, Jo Tinsley
puts TRIHARD’s hair care range to the test to see if it really does eliminate the negative effects of pool chemicals and ocean salts on your hair.
What exactly does a pre- and post-swim pamper look like?
Ever noticed dry skin after a sea or pool swim? Chlorine and ocean salts can cause dry and tight feeling skin, but thankfully swim skincare products such as TRIHARD's can add a layer of protection. Just like their hair care range, these skin care products use Dead Sea minerals such as magnesium chloride and Maris sal, alongside red algae to remove pool
chemicals while naturally derived oils hydrate your skin post-swim and relieve irritation. Our top picks?
Swim & Sun Face Wash: Eliminates chlorine, hydrates dry post-swim skin and relieves the effects of being out in the sun.
Pre & Post Swim Body Lotion: Rub it into your skin before your swim to reduce chlorine absorption, then use after to hydrate and relieve discomfort.
Pre & Post Swim Eye Gel:
A moisturising gel to alleviate goggle marks, hydrate dry skin and soothe swollen skin.
The Hair Combo-o: Complete hair protection before and after a swim, the After-Swim Shampoo Extra Boost and Pre & Post-Swim Conditioner eliminate chlorine, hydrate hair and relieve dry scalp.
Outdoor Swimmer reader’s tips for hair care
We polled our readers to find out more about their hair care routines. Here are just a
few of their tips for protecting their hair from the effects of pools chemicals – alongside a few of our own.
Prevention is key. Dry hair is like a sponge that soaks up the chlorinated water. Try rinsing your hair with cold, clean water before you enter the pool, says Jo Cheesbrough who put in 20 hours a week for 15 years as a swim instructor.
Once you’ve wet your hair,
comb through some conditioner, which acts as a barrier to stop chlorine sitting on your hair.
Wear a swim cap. Its your first line of defence against chlorine. Wetting your hair first will help it fit more easily over your hair.
Shower immediately after your swim, preferably naked. This is the key to reducing itchy and dry skin says Rowan Clarke
who taught babies to swim for 11 years.
After washing your hair with swimmers’ shampoo, apply a conditioner and leave it in for as long as you can to add back in the moisture the chlorine has stripped out.
Let your hair dry naturally; blow driers will dry your hair out more.
Swim in outdoor pools!
Chlorine gas evaporates from the water faster outdoors, reducing the concentration in the water and the amount of chlorine being absorbed into your hair and skin.
