Conkers hanging low in the trees, blackberries on bushes and a definite nip in the air... there is no denying that autumn is near and while I am the first to hold out for some late summer sun I have been feeling a bit of a 'back to school' restlessness and need to refresh my swim routine. Now is a great time to reflect on your swimming so far this year and consider how you want to approach the cooler months. Do you want to get back to the pool and work on some technique or perhaps swim through the winter for the first time? As the air temperature cools, it will sometimes feel warmer in the water than out and if you time it right you can get a beautiful morning swim with mist steaming from your swim spot. If you are in Bristol this autumn, head down to the harbour to support the community trial to allow swimming in Bristol Harbour in the future. I will certainly be planning a trip west to take a dip! I love how swimmers are actively making a difference through swimming, Lewis Pugh is another great example. Lewis is currently swimming the length of the Hudson River in New York to raise awareness of river pollution.

If you are considering your first winter season of swimming I can recommend finding a local group to swim with. Our September issue is a celebration of swimming communities and if it wasn't for my swimming community and friends I wouldn't make it out of bed on cold, dark days in winter. Another great way to keep swimming all year round is to find a venue near you that offers facilities and safety cover, or to train for an event to keep you motivated whatever the weather – like Simon, who will be swimming 10km in Loch Lomond this Saturday.
