Dear fellow swimmers,
The Outdoor Swimmer team has been working flat out this week to meet our press deadline for the November issue, which will be posted next weekend. While northern hemisphere open water events are coming to an end for 2023, swimmers are gearing up for winter swimming. Whether you’re planning to continue swimming outside or looking
to train indoors during the colder months, you’ll find advice and inspiration in Outdoor Swimmer magazine. Look out too for our Christmas Gift Guide supplement. Our October issue sold out – the best way to ensure you don’t miss out in November is to subscribe.
We know many of you are excited about winter swimming. This week we had a reminder that it can be dangerous. An inquest found that Kellie
Poole most likely died from cardiac arrest due to an underlying heart condition triggered by cold water immersion during an event in Derbyshire last year. While the inquest found no fault with the provision of the session, the coroner expressed concern about the lack of regulation in the sector. If you thinking of exploring the cold this year, please make yourself fully aware of the risks. If you are signing up to a training session or organised event, do check their safety credentials. We have
some advice on this here. We’re also holding a winter swimming Q&A via Zoom next Wednesday lunchtime.
