YOUR ESSENTIAL WEEKLY EDIT OF OUTDOOR SWIMMING
#swimwildandfree
It seems so very British to always talk about the
weather, but it is such a huge part of the outdoor swimming experience that it is hard not to mention. Just a week ago UK swimmers were breaking ice just to dip or swim a few strokes. Even the River Thames in Greater London, where Simon swims, froze – that is pretty rare. In contrast, this week has been unseasonably warm. Warmer winter weather brings wind and rain, which makes outdoor swimming less appealing. The faff of changing in the rain when you are already wet and cold is enough to make
anyone a fair-weather swimmer.
Also this week, swimmers in the Northern Hemisphere celebrated the Winter Solstice – midwinter. The shortest day and longest night is now behind us and if you pay attention, each day
you can notice a few more minutes of daylight. This natural cycle is something we celebrate in the December issue. As outdoor swimmers, we notice the changing seasons more than others; I think it’s about being eye-level with the earth. Seeing green shoots in the riverbank is such a sign of hope for me. As many celebrate Christmas this weekend and 2022 is ending, we can all hope for better things in 2023.
Enjoy this week’s newsletter! I am so proud of our digital team of two, working tirelessly to bring our content to life online. This week they have pulled together a Christmas Quiz worth saving for the Christmas dinner table. Even non-swimmers will enjoy it. Of course, you will have had to read all your issues of Outdoor Swimmer magazine to be in with a chance to get full marks!
Finally, whether you are escaping family drama or dogding the ‘betwixmas’ lull, why not tell us about your swimming in our ‘Attitudes to Outdoor
Swimming 2022’ survey so we can be well informed for next year! Enjoy the water this Christmas, thank you for being part of our community.
Merry
Christmas,
