YOUR ESSENTIAL WEEKLY EDIT OF OUTDOOR SWIMMING
#swimwildandfree
Dear fellow swimmers
Last weekend I was invited to Aspire’s annual swimmers' dinner. Each year, Aspire – who support people with spinal injury – organises Channel swimming relay teams and other fundraising swims. I left in awe not only because of the impressive swimming but also because of the incredible amount of money raised, which this year broke all previous records.
On the same evening, Editor Ella attended Swim Tayka’s dinner, which celebrated the successes of their Channel swimmers who raised
money to fund learn-to-swim courses in countries such as Mozambique, Peru and Jamaica – areas that have high drowning rates, especially among children. Both events were fun, but also moving, and a true demonstration of the power of swimming to do good.
Also this week, as water temperatures plunge, I was reminded of
the dangers of winter swimming and the risk of hypothermia – as you may have seen if you follow me on Twitter. Last week we published an article on risk, benefits and perception in cold water swimming, which has been widely shared. However, after witnessing someone suffering hypothermia, I’ve written again on the subject. In brief, it’s not just the time you spend in the water that puts you at risk, but the small things you do before you enter the water and how
you recover afterwards. If you swim in cold water, please read these two articles and share them with your swim groups.
"Until recently, I associated hypothermia with people pushing their limits. My own experience of hypothermia happened in the summer while swimming the length of Windermere. But things I’ve seen recently have prompted a rethink." Simon Griffiths explains why even short winter dips need planning and preparation.
