An Active England swimming summer holiday in Devon awaits…
We’ve been chatting with Tatty, Active England’s Lead Guide in the South West, about some
of the best swim spots in Devon she loves to take Active England guests to. These locations are for the wild dippers and swimmers and offer the perfect balance of exploration and relaxation.
Where to swim in the sea?
First up is the rarely visited Mothecombe Beach, nestled away in a sheltered, sandy
cove on the south coast of Devon. Its shallow waters makes for a perfect dipping spot, while more adventurous swimmers can swim across the bay at low tide.
The Devon swim holidays also involve a raid on Cornwall! Cawsands is a stunning swimming location with clear waters, a shingle bottom and notoriously calm waters.
Then there is Hope Cove near Salcombe– a beautiful spot for floating over the reef to take in the aquatic garden of seaweed and fish below.
Wild swim on Dartmoor
One of Tatty’s favourite wild swim spots is Sharrah Pool tucked away
in the heart of Dartmoor. Sharrah Pool is only accessible by foot – a beautiful 2 mile walk through the National Park. This magical location is surrounded by ancient woodland and offers a swimming experience like no other. It’s truly wild swimming at its best!
Lido swims
Next up is Tinside Lido – overlooking the sea in Plymouth. This 1935 Art-Décor lido was designed in 1935 by John Wibberley and is consistently voted in the top 10 of Europe’s
outdoor pools! It’s fabulous in every way, with fountains and projecting jetties. An experience not be missed!
Situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Chagford on Dartmoor is a splendid river-fed, open air Lido which you will visit for a relaxing late morning swim. This community-run lido is treasured by locals and visitors. It was hand-dug by villagers in the 1930s and remains a fabulous location for a dip.
